Over 200 people were in the congregation at Thaxted Church last month to celebrate the historical church service of Plough Sunday when the soil, the plough and those who work the land are blessed.
A large number of farmers from all over Essex joined together with the local congregation for the service which was led by the Bishop of Colchester, the Right Revd Roger Morris, and the Rural Chaplain for the Chelmsford Diocese, Revd Janet Nicholls.
During the service a horse plough was drawn the length of the nave by the Thaxted Morris Men who then danced under the crossing of the church. At the end of the service Bishop Roger led the congregation through the West Door out of the Church, where he climbed up on a tractor to bless its mounted plough. The members of the congregation then returned into the church to enjoy an appropriate “Ploughman’s Lunch.
Displays by R.A.B.I, FCN and the Essex YFC were then available to view in the church. A collection taken during the service raised over £570 which was shared between R.A.B.I and FCN.
