The ‘Bring a Broker to Market’ initiative is the brainchild of R.A.B.I Brecon & Radnor committee and aims to support the charity’s welfare work in the region.
In the week commencing October 26, farmers can donate a broker or cull ewe, which is no longer fit for breeding, to their local market – with the proceeds going to R.A.B.I. Typically, a cull ewe is worth around £35-£90.
Linda Jones, R.A.B.I’s regional manager for Wales, said: “The concept is simple: we are asking farmers to donate a cull ewe to support R.A.B.I’s welfare work in Brecon & Radnor. The money raised might help fund a relief worker for a farmer who is recovering from an accident, or it might provide specialist equipment to someone who is ill or disabled. This year, we have already given out grants of around £24k in Brecon and Radnor.”
Hugh Davies, treasurer of the Brecon & Radnor R.A.B.I committee and a NFU Mutual agent in Builth Wells, came up with the idea. Now, the Brecon & Radnor committee is asking local farmers to donate one ewe from their auction ‘lots’ on behalf of R.A.B.I – a 155-year-old welfare charity that gives approximately £2m per year in grants to those in the farming world who are struggling financially.
Elaine Stephens, vice-chair of the Brecon & Radnor R.A.B.I committee, said: “We hope farmers will help us to help others by getting involved. Your support not only enables us to raise funds, but it also raises awareness amongst new audiences.”
The scheme has the support of the following livestock auctions in Brecon & Radnor:
