Eighteen R.A.B.I supporters gathered at the Larpool Viaduct in Whitby, North Yorkshire to abseil 40m down one of the viaduct’s 13 archways.
The Larpool Viaduct is a disused brick railway bridge that crosses the River Esk. The challenge was organised by Lost Earth Adventures, but Mary Smith, vice chairman for the West Yorkshire committee, was the driving force behind the fundraiser. She said: “I wanted to do something different. I’ve done abseiling before and this seemed like a good way to raise money.
“Most were first-timers and very frightened to start with, but by the end they were so happy that they had done it. I think a few will give abseiling another go in the future.”
Regional manager Georgina Lamb, who also took part, said: “We had an interesting mix of people, including Brian Johnson who is 70.”
More than £1,000 was raised by the team.
