She’s helped bring in the harvest, herded up dairy cows and pulled a Caterpillar from a ditch, but a Suffolk farmer’s ‘pride and joy’ – his three-wheel Reliant Rialto ‘Del Boy’ van called Madge – is now getting ready to put the turkeys in their pens this Christmas!
Robert Wrinch, an arable farmer from Suffolk, was given the three-wheel van – similar to the one driven by the character Del Boy in the hit BBC 1980s sitcom Only Fools and Horses – for his 50th birthday. Friends delivered it to him dressed up as Batman and Robin, to recreate a famous scene from the sitcom.
Since then, ‘Madge’ has become a regular sight on the farm, carrying corn and rape and helping with the ploughing. Next up, is rounding up Mr Turnbull’s turkeys for Christmas!
Stowmarket Young Farmers have produced a calendar for 2016 called ‘The Adventures of Madge’ detailing her exploits on the farm. There’s even a Valentine’s love interest in February as Madge – who was made back in 1988 when Only Fools and Horses was at its peak – falls for an amorous mustard-coloured Range Rover!
All proceeds from the young farmers’ calendar will be donated to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I), a welfare charity that supports farmers in financial difficulties. The family took all of the photographs for the calendar themselves.
Robert’s wife Karen added: “We wanted to do something that would make people smile while raising money for a very worthy charity like R.A.B.I. We simply cannot imagine not having Madge around the place as she is invaluable, especially around harvest time.”
