Level 1 students at Myerscough College combined practical livestock skills with fundraising this summer, raising £603.25 for RABI through their annual calf show, held alongside Open Farm Sunday at Lodge Farm on 7 June.
In the weeks leading up to the event, learners worked closely with their tutors to prepare the college’s pedigree Hereford cows and calves for the show. Through around 10 practical training sessions, students developed their skills in halter training, grooming and presenting livestock to a high standard.
As part of the preparations, the students also named this year’s calves, continuing a tradition started by last year’s Level 1 learners. The newest additions to the herd were named Trouble, Megan, Rylie, Pepper, Daisy, Twinkletoes, Maggie and Lottie.
Alongside the calf show, students organised a fundraising raffle in support of RABI and the Farmers Community Network (FCN). They sold raffle tickets and secured prize donations from local businesses and organisations, with the support of the rural community helping to make the fundraising a success.
RABI would like to thank the students, tutors, local businesses and everyone who attended, donated raffle prizes or bought tickets. Their support has helped raise valuable funds while giving students the opportunity to build practical skills, confidence and teamwork through a real community event.
The funds raised will help RABI continue providing practical, financial and emotional support to farming people across England and Wales.
