A fabulously festive series of RABI carol concerts were held across Wales at the start of December.
Ceredigion kicked things off with a lovely church service held in Eglwys Gwenlli, Synod Inn, where the committee’s usual bingo caller, the Rev. Beth Davies went back to her day job as vicar and expertly oversaw an evening of carols, readings and solo performances.
Both Monmouthshire and Montgomeryshire’s concerts were held concurrently on Sunday December 3. The South Walians in Raglan were treated to some fantastic singing from Ben & Christie Baker as well as a wonderful solo from RABI’s most musical staff member, Regional Manager Liz Rees. While in Welshpool a great crowd gathered to hear renowned tenor Aled Wyn Davies enthral the crowd, with no need of a microphone, as well as some lovely choral singing from Dyffryn Tanat YFC and the Welshpool Highschool Band.
It was standing room only for Clwyd’s concert on Wednesday December 6, with Ruthin Auction Mart full to the rafters to hear some award winning performers. Fresh from sweeping the board at the national Eisteddfod, Holywell’s Silver Band provided the backing music for all the carols as well as the Meibion Marchan choir, and they were afforded a rest only when the acapella group, Mountain Harmony took to the stage – well, cattle ring. The quality of the music raised the roof, and probably prevented some neighbours from falling asleep!
Things were rounded off in Carmarthenshire with a lovely traditional carol service, where audience participation was as important as the quality of the singing! It was lovely to see the farming community come out in force to support all the concerts, to not only raise money but also to get together socially over mince pies and mulled wine. All the concerts were a triumph thanks to the superb organization and dedication of the county committees, putting everyone into the Christmas spirit. Diolch yn fawr a Nadolig Llawen!
