Graham and Carol Meaden recently moved to an independent flat at Manson House in Bury St Edmunds after a lifetime of farming.
“We like it here very much,” Graham said. “The staff are great. You can tell how good a place it is because the staff have been here for years!”
The couple first heard about R.A.B.I around ten years ago, when Carol was having difficulty claiming her pension. Welfare officer Mel Jones helped Carol resolve the issue and kept in touch with the couple over the following years.
Graham and Carol continued working on their small holding near Welshpool until last year. Carol explained: “I had a shoulder replacement, so Graham had to look after me as well as the holding while we were lambing.”
Graham added: “I lost more lambs last year because I needed to care for Carol. I realised we couldn’t look after the livestock anymore.”
The couple decided to retire from farming. They searched for a dog-friendly home they could move to, as they did not want to part with their springer spaniel Bailey.
Carol said: “It was Mel who said R.A.B.I could help us with accommodation. He told us about Manson House, where a flat had become available.”
Graham and Carol moved into one of Manson House’s flats with Bailey in September last year. They’ve settled in well since then, getting involved in the available activities. The other residents have enjoyed having Bailey around and many add him to their paintings during their fortnightly art classes in the greenhouse.
“We love it here,” Graham added. “They’ve been able to help us with everything we want.”
