John Hoare, a Devon supporter, completed his virtual Kilimanjaro trek and raised more than £3,500.
Over eight days, John hiked 72 miles around his home in South Brent, 20 miles more than he’d originally planned! He went beyond the altitude of the planned trek (2,344 metres) by climbing Brent Hill multiple times, topping up with lots of stair climbing to total 3,700 metres.
John had initially planned to climb the mountain for his 70th birthday later this year. Since the trek was likely to be cancelled, he decided to recreate it at home.
“The Virtual Trek went really well,” John said. “It was good to raise so much money doing something I enjoy. The weather conditions were generally ideal, not too hot and mostly dry.
“The support and donations from the people in South Brent and everywhere else has been incredible. I even had a donation from someone in New Zealand who used to live in our village.
“I really appreciate it knowing the funds will be going to those in the farming community in need.”
John celebrated his success with a quiet roast beef dinner with his wife Liz.
