During 2018, R.A.B.I received 780 new enquiries for help. Around 22% of these new applicants cited injury or illness as the main reason for their current financial difficulties.
Last year, the charity paid out around £118k to clear domestic bills for farming people who were recovering from accidents, illness, or surgery. The charity also funded £69k for relief farm workers to keep the farm running while people got back on their feet.
Not all of the help R.A.B.I give is financial. In many cases, the charity is able to offer benefits advice. Derek, a sheep and cattle farmer from Wales, was struggling following an accident that left him in hospital, not knowing when he would get better.
Our welfare officer helped Derek apply for the employment and support allowance.
If you know anyone with a background in farming who is struggling financially as a result of illness or injury, please ask them to call our confidential helpline – 0800 188 4444
