For over 25 years, Ginny has been an active and passionate member of the Buckinghamshire RABI Committee. Her journey into volunteering began during her time as an NFU group secretary, when she was asked to help sell raffle tickets at a show.
“I sold lots of raffle tickets just by going up to people and asking,” Ginny says. “The local farming fraternity saw me getting involved and suggested I join the committee.”
Since then, Ginny has taken on several roles, from secretary to chair. The Buckinghamshire RABI Committee focuses on raising vital funds through a variety of events including pie and pudding nights, autumn suppers, cream teas, carol services and farm walks. Each event is not only an opportunity to fundraise, but also a chance to stay connected with the local farming community. Because of this, Ginny has continued her support even after retirement.
Ginny finds huge value in maintaining her ties with the farming world and hearing the stories of those supported by RABI, seeing first-hand how RABI makes an impact.
“I like to be busy and it’s nice to hear from those RABI has supported. It shows you why we do what we do. There’s one couple whose son and daughter-in-law were helped by RABI – they always attend our events or donate if they can’t come. When families have been helped by RABI, they want to give back.”
Support for volunteers from RABI has made a big difference too, including the Volunteer Voice focus group for RABI volunteers from across England and Wales to share their views and ideas.
One of Ginny’s proudest moments was being recognised for her years of service: “When I was secretary, I was presented with a 25-year volunteering award at the Bucks County Show, it was very special to be recognised like that.”
Ginny’s story is a reminder that volunteering with RABI is about connection, community and making a real difference to the lives of farming people. Her advice for potential volunteers? “You’ve got to enjoy it. Do what you’re good at. Whether it’s selling raffle tickets or making scones, with RABI there’s always a role for you.”
